Ancestry research aside, if you’ve ever found yourself fascinated by the life story of someone who lived a hundred or more years before you were born – then this biography database should be your first stop. You can search through the database alphabetically or just search by specific name.

This database turns up a very long list of biographies written up by genealogy researchers who’ve conducted a thorough investigation and provide their results. Read about the person who built the old stone tavern in the middle of town, or the lives of the people who founded the community where you live.

Family Search

6.  FamilySearch

This website is a treasure trove for genealogical seekers. It is run by the LDS church, which puts a great emphasis on genealogy as part of their religion. Their family history library in Salt Lake City, Utah has one of the largest collections of genealogical records in the world, and those records come from all parts of the planet. Many of these records have been placed online, so you can use this site to search for your ancestors by name. You’ll find not only official records, but family histories submitted by other people, which may include your ancestor. If the record you’re looking for isn’t there, or if you want to see the original, you can find the film number of the record and order it through your local LDS family history library, as there are brances all over the country. This is all free to search, so get searching!

Ellis Island Passenger Records

Unless you have Native American heritage, you’re going to come across a point in your search when your ancestors immigrated. If you live in the United States, you may have relatives who came through Ellis Island, especially if your ancestors are more recent immigrants. The Ellis Island Passenger Records site has records of passengers on ships that came through the port of New York between 1892–1924. You can search these passenger lists and see ship manifests for free.

You’ll not only find country and state links, you’ll also find links to military genealogy sites, lineage society sites, family reunion sites, surname sites, adoption sites, newspaper sites, and more. If there’s something to do with genealogy online and you want to find it, Cyndi’s list is the place to look. All the categories are arranged alphabetically for easier searching, and many beginning genealogists find that this is one of the best places for them to start their online search, because there are links to literally hundreds of resources here.

Access Genealogy

1.  Access Genealogy

Access Genealogy is up a notch from the typical ancestry website. Its main page is pleasantly clean and well organized. Along the left side you’ll find links to some of the most unique research sources including charts, links to old letters, military records, native american records and much more.

One of the more fascinating resources here are the transcribed cemetary records. There are researchers in every State around the U.S. that walk through the oldest cemetaries and actually transcribe names along with birthdates, date of death and family members. This resource alone will hold your interest for hours.
